MOHAMED: From Earthquake Survivor to Successful Beekeeper
For Mohamed, the earthquake marked the beginning of a difficult chapter. Like many families in the High Atlas, he lost his home, his livelihood, and the stability he had worked so hard to build. Determined to rebuild his future, he joined Amal Association’s livelihood recovery program and became one of its new beekeepers. While other beneficiaries received livestock, Mohamed chose beekeeping as a new path toward economic independence.
Starting as a beekeeper was both exciting and challenging. Before the first honey harvest, Mohamed and the team worked tirelessly, transporting beehives across long distances to follow the flowering seasons and ensure healthy colonies. The journey required patience and perseverance, but the first successful harvest proved that their efforts were worthwhile. The second harvest brought even better results, giving Mohamed confidence that he had made the right choice.

Through professional training, Mohamed learned modern beekeeping techniques that were completely new to him. He now works with modern hives, carefully monitors the health of his colonies, and understands how to improve honey production while protecting the bees. These new skills have not only increased his knowledge but have also given him the confidence to build a sustainable livelihood for himself and his family.

Today, Mohamed looks beyond honey production. His dream is to help establish a local cooperative that will support beekeepers while promoting other traditional products from the High Atlas, including amlou, walnut oil, almond oil, and carob. By participating in exhibitions and eventually reaching international markets, he hopes to transform this initiative into a sustainable business that creates lasting opportunities for his community.
