Brahim: A Story of Resilience and Empowerment Through Beekeeping

Before the devastating earthquake in Al Haouz, Ibrahim Ait Hssaine, a resident of Alousse village in the Ighil commune, supported his wife and three children through farming and construction work. Like many families in the region, he relied on agriculture and livestock to provide a stable income. The earthquake changed everything. His crops were destroyed, all of his livestock perished, and the livelihood he had spent years building disappeared overnight, leaving his family facing an uncertain future.

In the aftermath of the disaster, Amal Association launched livelihood recovery initiatives to help affected families rebuild their lives. Ibrahim joined the beekeeping project. Although he had always dreamed of becoming a beekeeper, he had never been able to afford the necessary equipment. Through the project, he received beehives, equipment, and comprehensive training, giving him the opportunity to start a completely new source of income.

“A Routine Hive Inspection”

When Ibrahim began the training, he had no experience with bees. Step by step, he learned how to inspect hives, understand bee behavior, manage frames, and care for healthy colonies. As his confidence grew, so did his passion for beekeeping. Harvesting honey for the first time brought him immense joy, and selling his honey and earning an income from it gave him renewed hope. Each successful harvest strengthened his determination to continue growing his beekeeping business.

“I lost everything in the earthquake, but through beekeeping, I found a new beginning.”

Today, Ibrahim looks to the future with optimism. He hopes to expand his apiary and work alongside other local beekeepers to establish a cooperative where they can process, package, and market products such as pure honey and traditional Moroccan Amlou. His journey demonstrates how targeted livelihood support, practical training, and determination can help families recover from disaster and build a more resilient future.
